Chapter 197: The True Final Boss (2)
Chapter 197: The True Final Boss (2)
The caveman roared.
The sound echoed through the entire inverted corridor.
Dorian swallowed nervously.
"Well..."
The giant continued charging toward him across the ceiling.
"That’s concerning."
Without wasting any time, the elf pulled the small glass jar from his pocket again.
He opened it.
And dozens of moss spiders shot out.
"Come on, little ones."
The green creatures raced across the walls and ceiling.
Within seconds, they got to work.
Roots. Vines. Moss.
Everything began spreading throughout the corridor.
The spiders launched plant fibers directly at the caveman’s legs.
Trying to slow him down.
Trying to immobilize him.
Trying to make him trip.
But nothing worked.
The monster simply kept advancing.
The roots and vines snapped apart.
The moss was torn away beneath his feet.
Dorian’s eyes widened.
"That should be working better."
The caveman was already dangerously close.
Then Seraphine intervened.
The mage raised a hand.
Her four floating magical swords spun around her.
Then they shot forward.
The energy blades crossed the corridor like bolts of lightning.
Directly toward the monster.
But at that exact moment—
Will smiled and aimed his laser pistol straight at the mage’s grimoire.
"Seraphine!"
Max reacted instantly.
The laser fired.
The mage barely managed to turn her head.
But before the beam could hit—
A hammer appeared spinning through the air.
Max’s weapon struck the shot.
The laser was deflected.
And the hammer kept moving, flying directly toward Will.
"What?"
The drow pulled on the reins.
The black bird moved at an absurd speed.
The hammer missed.
Barely brushing a few feathers.
And by the time Max caught it again—
Will was already moving.
The black creature crossed the entire corridor in an instant.
Now it stood directly in front of them.
Right at the entrance to the hallway.
Thara stepped forward.
She looked directly into her sister’s eyes.
Or the eyes of whoever inhabited her body.
"Will."
The man trapped inside Vesper’s body looked at her.
He didn’t answer.
Thara clenched her fists.
"I don’t care who you are."
Will raised an eyebrow.
"No."
"We lived together for a long time. We shared too much."
Thara’s voice trembled slightly.
"You’re still my brother."
For several seconds, Will simply stared at her.
Then he let out a bitter laugh.
"I never could stand you."
Everyone froze.
Even Thara.
"I could never stand your attitude."
Will pointed at the drow.
"Always so cold. So proper. So insufferable."
Thara lowered her gaze.
But she didn’t respond.
Will continued.
"And I always felt like you looked at me with pity."
The drow immediately raised her head.
"No."
Will frowned.
"No?"
"I never looked at you with pity."
Thara’s voice was firm.
"I only wanted to understand you."
Max watched the scene without interfering.
For the first time, he felt that both of them were being completely sincere.
Thara continued.
"That’s why I studied."
Will blinked.
"What?"
"That’s why I researched."
The drow reached into her clothing.
And pulled out a small notebook.
Its pages were filled with drawings.
Seals.
Magic circles.
Notes.
Max’s eyes widened.
"What is that?"
Thara held up the notebook.
"My research."
Will stared at it.
He looked genuinely confused.
"Research on what?"
"Summoning."
The answer surprised everyone.
Even Seraphine.
Thara held the notebook in front of her.
"I found a way to return summons to their own worlds."
Max felt as though everything had just changed completely.
"What?"
Thara nodded.
"It works."
Max stepped forward.
The drow flipped through several pages.
Showing diagrams and magical seals.
"I tested it years ago."
Will began looking at her with a completely different expression.
"On what?"
Thara pointed to one of the drawings.
"A giant mosquito."
Will’s eyes flew open.
"WHAT?!"
The drow nodded.
"One of your earliest summons."
Now it was Max’s turn to stare at Will.
"A giant mosquito?"
Will placed a hand on his forehead.
"This can’t be happening."
Thara continued.
"It disappeared overnight."
Will looked more outraged with every passing second.
"It was YOU!"
The drow nodded.
"Yes."
"YOU WERE RUINING MY EXPERIMENTS!"
The fury was immediate.
The black bird screeched, its feathers standing on end.
And Will raised a hand.
A ring glowed.
A sphere of fire appeared above his palm.
"ALL THIS TIME!"
The fireball shot forward.
Directly toward Thara.
The drow barely had time to widen her eyes.
But Max was already moving.
He jumped in front of her and took the hit head-on.
BOOOOOM!
Flames engulfed him.
Don screamed.
Dorian’s mouth fell open.
Seraphine let out a sigh.
And then...
Nothing.
The fire vanished.
Completely absorbed.
As if it had never existed.
Max landed on his feet.
Unharmed.
Will froze.
"What?"
Max smiled.
"Fire Resistance Ring."
The man propelled himself forward again.
And this time he didn’t land on the ground.
He landed on the bird.
Right on the creature’s back.
Directly in front of Will.
The bird screeched and tried to move.
But Max was already there.
Less than a meter away.
Face-to-face.
Will clenched his teeth.
Max gripped his hammer.
Ready.
Neither attacked.
They simply stared at one another.
Then Will spoke.
"So it’s you."
Max raised an eyebrow.
"Me?"
Will smiled.
A smile full of resentment.
"I’ve heard the rumors from the Black Market."
Max felt a bad premonition.
Will pointed behind him.
First at Seraphine.
"Word reached me of an incredibly powerful mage."
Then at Dorian.
"And a rather insane elf."
Dorian smiled.
"Thank you."
"It wasn’t a compliment."
"I’ll take it anyway."
Will looked back at Max.
"And I also heard about someone with fire resistance."
Max remained silent.
Will’s smile disappeared.
"Now I understand."
Max frowned.
"Understand what?"
Will tightened his grip on the laser pistol.
"You."
The wind itself seemed to stop.
"You are the ones responsible."
Seraphine raised an eyebrow.
Will fixed his gaze on the group.
One by one.
And finally answered.
"For ruining my plans to sell my summons."
His voice dripped with hatred.
"I can recognize you now."
The black bird let out a shriek.
The caveman was still fighting Seraphine’s magical swords in the background.
But for the first time...
It no longer seemed like the most important thing happening.
Will clenched his teeth.
And spoke the words that sent a chill down Max’s spine.
"You are the ones who destroyed my entire business with the Seven-Pointed Star Cult."
